The original contract is the traditional Urdu Nikah Nama signed during the ceremony by both spouses, witnesses, and the licensed Nikah Registrar. Under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, this record must be registered in the civil register of the local Union Council or Cantonment Board, which then issues the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) through NADRA.
The NADRA computerised certificate standardises the Urdu contract into a digital, machine-readable format featuring bilingual English and Urdu text, national identity numbers, and QR-code verification. Destination authorities scrutinise this document for spouse sponsorship, family residence visas, and civil status changes. Depending on your destination, the certificate requires either a federal MOFA apostille for Hague Convention member states or consular embassy legalisation for Gulf nations.

Municipal registry issuance and NADRA computerised format standards
- Confirm that the original Urdu Nikah Nama is formally recorded in the register of the relevant local Union Council or Cantonment Board.
- Submit the Union Council registration entry along with original CNICs of both spouses to the nearest NADRA centre to generate the computerised certificate.
- Verify that the computerised certificate matches the groom and bride names, CNIC numbers, parentage, and the exact date of marriage stated on the original contract.

- If an error exists on the manual Nikah Nama, the correction must be processed through the Union Council Secretary and the Nikah Registrar with supporting affidavits before approaching NADRA.
- For clerical discrepancies on an already issued NADRA certificate, submit the original manual contract and both spouses CNICs at NADRA for database reconciliation.
Central NADRA registration required; Manual or unverified Union Council slips cannot be attested. Ensure the civil record is entered in the NADRA national database before filing for MOFA attestation.
MOFA stamp and embassy acceptance
MOFA federal verification, Hague Apostille, and embassy legalisation
- Submit the computerised NADRA certificate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for federal verification, where an apostille sticker or federal seal is affixed.
- For Gulf countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, the MOFA-attested certificate must then be legalised by the respective embassy in Islamabad.
- For European and Commonwealth destinations, sworn translation into Arabic, French, Spanish, or German may be required following MOFA apostille certification.
